Top 5 Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the age limit?

Travel Insurance Direct is only able to insure US citizens who are under 61 years of age at their date of trip departure.

  • Can I buy a policy even though I have already started traveling?

You are welcome to insure with us, even if you've already started traveling.

Although you don't have to be at home to take out a policy, please be aware that the start date of your policy must reflect your intended date of travel (ie you must hold tickets to travel on your nominated start date in order for your policy to be valid).

  • I don't have receipts for my personal items. Can I still make a claim?

Yes, however in the event of a claim for high value items, you are required to provide original receipts. Please be aware though that when we receive a personal belongings claim, you will still be asked to provide proof of ownership for the lost or stolen items.

We understand that you might not be able to produce such receipts for each and every item, but you still have to 'tip the balance' and should be able to provide evidence of ownership where you could be reasonably expected to have such evidence.

Typically, the insurers may accept photographic evidence in conjunction with warranty cards, manuals, receipts, bank or credit card statements as proof of ownership. In the end, common sense prevails and you should ask yourself, "Do these documents conclusively prove that I owned this item?"

  • How do I get Emergency Assistance overseas?

The Emergency Assistance number is printed on your Certificate of Insurance.

    24 hour emergency numbers:
    1.866.0898 from the U.S
    +1.804.281.5700 (Collect)
  • What is the benefit for high value items?

Our policy provides coverage for up to USD$500 in total (not per item) for all high value items combined - these are jewelry, watches, gems, furs, cameras and camera equipment, camcorders, sporting equipment, computers, radios and other electronic items.

Unfortunately this limit cannot be increased. Please be aware that you will need to provide the original receipt for the item in the event of a claim.
